Memory Mapping Series: How to Frame a Memory and Shape Your Story
Baraboo Writers Blast — Memoir Mapping Series
Everyone has a story worth telling — and once you’ve gathered memories and explored their emotional layers, the next step is learning how to shape them into a memoir.
In this supportive workshop, we’ll explore the building blocks of memoir structure and voice. Through guided exercises, you’ll experiment with different ways to frame a memory — as a vivid scene, a reflective vignette, a braided moment, or a piece that moves between past and present. You’ll also learn how to choose the right voice for your story: the child‑self who lived it, the adult‑self who understands it, or a blend of both.
You’ll leave with a draft start, a clearer sense of your story’s shape, and practical tools you can use again and again.
✨ What We’ll Explore Together
**How to decide where a story begins and ends**
**Ways to shape a memory into a scene, vignette, or braided piece**
**How voice changes meaning — and how to choose the right one**
**What to include, what to leave out, and how to create focus**
**Gentle, step‑by‑step prompts to help you begin drafting**
Examples we’ll play with:
**Turning a childhood moment into a scene with sensory detail**
**Rewriting the same memory in two different voices**
**Exploring how a single moment can be shaped three different ways**
**Choosing the “frame” that makes your story feel true and alive**
This is a welcoming, inclusive space. Many people worry they’re “not real writers.” In this group, we let go of that idea. Your lived experience is enough. Your voice is enough. You are welcome exactly as you are.
I’m Windy Lynn Warren, and I bring both my lived experience and my Master’s in English and Creative Writing to guide you with care, clarity, and encouragement.
